HERITAGE PARTNERSHIPS – WIDER PERSPECTIVES CONFERENCE, 11-12 MAY 1998 In the framework of the UK Presidency of the European Union, at the invitation of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the National Trust co-ordinated a Conference/Workshop on “Heritage Partnerships – Wider Perspectives” in May 1998. The Conference/Workshop formed part of the culture and arts programme being held to complement the April 1998 ASEM II Summit and received support from the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The British Council and ICOMOS. The Conference/Workshop attracted an impressive range of speakers from both EU Member States and Asian countries who gave presentations on topics such as: Linking People and Place; The World Heritage Perspective; Sustaining Heritage; Funding Heritage; and Building Partnerships. Plenary Sessions were interspersed with small group discussion on specific topics, such as Heritage in the Community, Sustainable Tourism, and Membership. A Gala Dinner, at Lancaster House, was hosted by the Rt Honourable Chris Smith MP, UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, with Guests of Honour Derek Fatchett MP, UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Her Excellency Dr Ewa Nowotny, Ambassador to the Republic of Austria, the succeeding Presidency of the European Union.
